THE NEW CLASSIC ROCK 2: PLAYLIST

Lately, I’ve been discovering a ton of new bands that capture the spirit and sound of classic rock, so it felt like the perfect time to drop The New Classic Rock 2—a follow-up to our last playlist. This collection features artists from the past decade who channel the vibes of The Grateful Dead, Steely Dan, Paul McCartney, Allman Brothers Band, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, and more. It might be a little early, but these tracks are tailor-made for late spring and summer—whether you’re out on the golf course, kicking back with a drink by the pool, or just soaking up the sun. Some of my favorites on this list include Drugdealer, Mapache, The Texas Gentlemen, and Sylvie.

  1. You had me at Steely Dan. And the Allman Bros. And the Dead, Pink Floyd, etc.

Thanks for this. I keep trying to get myself to wade through playlists and Spotify suggestions to broaden my horizons and find newer music that doesn’t sound whiney, that uses real instruments, and that doesn’t just annoy me. I just listened to the beginnings of some of these, and it sounds as if there’s some good stuff in there. I definitely heard some Steely Dan influences, and “Love Direction” has a cool Motown/early British pop feel that I like.

I’ll listen more carefully later, but I appreciate having things narrowed down for me a bit!

    1. I’m always looking for music that sticks close to the classics – Steely Dan, Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers are some of my core favorites that drive my music taste. Glad I could help!

      1. Just as an aside–I just happened to the that “The Brothers” (they’re leaving out the “Allman” part, for obvious reasons) are playing a show at Madison Square Garden and other places. I was kind of shocked. It’s Jaimoe, Darek Trucks, Warren Haines, and others. I can’t decide if I should go. I was too young to see the original band, but I wonder if it might seem kind of sad. Of course, I DID just buy tickets to Patti’s Horses 50th anniversary show next… November…so…

      2. I’d say go for it! I wasn’t aware they are omitting the “Allman”, I’ll keep that in mind in the future – thanks for letting me know.

      3. Of course! I’m just mad that I never got to seem them back in the Duane (or at least Gregg) days. Every time I listen to “Mountain Jam” on Fillmore East I get fascinated by how they all seemed to be practically reading each others’ minds as they played–especially Jaimoe and Butch.
